Vintage rugs, Persian carpets and Oriental rugs

What is the difference between a hand-knotted and machine-knotted rug?

Rugs are offered in various price categories. But how so? What is the difference between an Oriental and a Persian rug, and when is something hand-knotted or machine-knotted? Seens primarily sells Persian and Oriental rugs and will explain it to you.

Materials of a rug

Perhaps you've already noticed: you pay more for a hand-knotted rug than for a machine-knotted one. Sounds logical, because handmade items are more expensive than those assembled by a machine. But what is the difference?

Hand-knotted rugs usually come from the Middle East. Persian rugs come from Iran, and Oriental rugs come from Afghanistan, India, or Pakistan. Unlike machine-knotted rugs, these carpets are made from natural materials: wool and cotton.

Machine-knotted rugs are usually made from partially synthetic fabrics in combination with natural materials.

The natural materials of a Persian rug, or Oriental carpet, make the quality higher. Wool and cotton are generally durable materials that are resistant to dirt. These rugs are usually also a lot heavier.

How long does it take to make a Persian rug?

A big difference between machine-made and hand-knotted rugs is time. Making a rug by hand is an intensive, time-consuming job. For a large Persian rug (for example, 4 by 5 meters), it can take up to 5 years. There are thousands, if not millions, of knots that are done by hand. Therefore, you understand that the prices are higher than for a machine-knotted rug.

What makes a Persian rug or Oriental carpet unique?

An Oriental rug or a Persian rug will never be completely perfect. On the contrary; the 'imperfections' are part of the rug. For example, certain elements that are supposed to be symmetrical may not be exactly symmetrical. This is simply because it remains human work.

You can see this on the underside of a hand-knotted rug. There you will also see that the underside is often almost as beautiful as the top, as it is almost as colorful. You won't see that with a machine-knotted rug because it is woven differently. The underside of those is often much duller and less colorful than the top.

So, it essentially comes down to the fact that every Persian rug, or Oriental carpet, is unique! No two hand-knotted rugs will be exactly the same.

It takes much more work to make Persian and Oriental carpets. It is a more expensive investment, but then you have something unique. The rugs – provided you take good care of them – retain their value and, due to their superb quality, last for years, if not generations!
