There are several characteristics that you can see whether a carpet is hand-knotted or machine-knotted. Hand-knotted carpets usually come from Iran (Persian carpet) or surrounding countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan or India (Oriental carpets). They are made of natural materials such as wool and cotton. Machine-knotted carpets are often made of (partly) synthetic materials. In addition, a hand-knotted carpet takes much more time to make. The knotting is a time-consuming, intensive job that can take years to complete one large rug. The thousands of knots are human work, which means that there are errors in the rug - another difference that you do not see with a machine-knotted rug. These can sometimes be spotted on the underside of the rug, for example certain small elements that are not exactly symmetrical. This makes each rug unique and of high quality!
