What makes a hand-knotted rug so unique? There are several characteristics that you can see whether a rug is hand-knotted or machine-knotted. Hand-knotted rugs usually come from Iran (Persian rug) or surrounding countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan or India (Oriental rugs). They are made of natural materials such as wool and cotton. Machine-knotted rugs are often made of (partly) synthetic materials. In addition, a hand-knotted rug takes much more time to make. Knotting is a time-consuming, intensive job that can take years to complete one large rug. The thousands of knots are human work, which means that there are errors in the rug - another difference that you do not see with a machine-knotted rug. You can sometimes spot these on the bottom of the rug, for example certain small elements that are not exactly symmetrical. This makes every rug unique and of high quality!
